In 1974, the late Dick Shaw and his wife Louise founded Redondo Beach Youth Basketball.
Their goal was simple:
"Teach the boys and girls of our community to play basketball!"
And so, the focus and charter of RBYB has been and continues to be the teaching all the children in the program the fundamentals of basketball and teamwork with a positive reinforcement.
Since 1974, our program has extended beyond the Redondo Beach city limits, which includes participants from El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, and Palos Verdes Peninsula. Players from these neighboring cities represent about 20% of the league players.
Our league is open to both boys and girls in grades one through eleven. Children in our league are as diverse in their skill level and understanding of the game of basketball as they are diverse in their family backgrounds and ethnicity. Life long friendships are begun, fostered and rekindled with each returning season.
Many of our elite players go on to play at their local high school basketball teams. Some return to Referee and others to Coach.
We are a self-sufficient, not-for-profit organization. Our league expenses are paid partly through our registration fees, league sponsorships, our Shoot-a-Thon fundraiser and the league sponsored Snack Bar. Every year the League has granted Financial Hardship Scholarships to Redondo Beach Residents and City Employees. We receive no other monetary help or grants.
The success of the RBYB league in remaining self-supporting has also been fostered by both the City of Redondo Beach and the Parks & Recreation Department, for allowing us free use of the Aviation Gym for our league games and Tournaments and use of lighted basketball court facilities at Perry Park. In addition, the Redondo Beach Unified School District allows us use of the lighted courts at Adams and Parras Middle School.
Finally, RBYB is a volunteer based organization. The Coaches and the Board Members are unpaid volunteers and give countless hours of time and energy in making the League a fun and safe place to learn to play basketball.
